My son loves this raglan sleeve colorblock t-shirt that I sew using Hanes T-shirts that I bought at Walmart.
My inspiration for this colorblock shirt came from the this henley button t-shirt with a pocket that Jason wore in one of the episodes of Pretty Little Liars.
Pattern
I drafted the pattern using one of my son’s t-shirts, but I’m not happy with the neckline. for the next one I would use Simplicity 1605. The pattern also include child sizes and I can use it for my younger son. It is also good to have because I can use it to sew pajamas.
The t-shirt placket was new for me, but it was very easy to make. I followed the instructions in the Melly Sews’ tutorial Henley T-Shirt Placket which was very helpful and it is also helpful to make plackets in woven fabrics.
There is a free pdf raglan shirt pattern for kids (18mt – 6T) available at Nap Time Creations.
Melly Sews also have a free pdf pattern for a V-Neck Raglan Sleeve (women small).
Fabric & Supplies
- For the fabric I used Hanes T-shirts that I bought at Walmart for under $5 in black, gray, and white. (I also bought Hanes T-shirts in yellow and blue to sew a pajama for my youngest son and I paid only $2 for each shirt). I bought the largest size I found (3XL or 4XL)
- black shirt buttons
Sewing Tip: I cut the shirt to use the original hem for the sleeves and for the body of the shirt. Topstiching with a double needle makes a very nice and professional finishing.
This color-block tee can be using multiple combinations, long sleeves or short sleeves. Here are some ideas:
Sweater knit fabric can also be used to make a very nice color block sweatshirt
My son has this beige and black sweater in his bucket list.
The best part is that these shirts/ sweatshirts is that they are very easy to make and can be sewn in under 1 hour.
Happy Sewing,
Anabelle
