This DIY Halloween Treat Bags tutorial is for a lined Pyramid that you can use as a candy bag. My kids have never been so excited for any of my other projects, they loved them. They can be party favors or if you are feeling generous, you can give them to trick or treaters.
The finished measurements are approximately 5 1/2″
In this tutorial, all seams are enclosed.
This is a good project to use your fabric scraps. You can make about 8 pyramids with 1/2″ yd of fabric.
I included instructions for two variations. The first one has the zipper on a flat side of the pyramid (left on the picture below). The second one has the zipper in a corner.
You’ll Need
Exterior Fabric: Fat Quarter of Halloween themed fabric (There are many to choose from on Etsy)
Fat Quarter of Lining Fabric:
12″ x 6″ Fusible Fleece:
12″ x 6″ Woven Interfacing SP101
5″ Zipper (We carry the largest selection of zippers by the yard)
Instructions
Seam allowances are 3/8″ unless otherwise specified.
Cutting
Cut (2) 6″ x 6″ pieces for:
- exterior fabric
- lining fabric
- fusible fleece
- Woven Interfacing
Zipper tabs: Cut (2) 1 1/4″ x 2″
Fusing Interfacing
Iron to the fusible fleece to the wrong side of the exterior fabric.
Iron the Woven interfacing to the wrong side of the lining fabrics
Prepare the zipper tabs
Fold the zipper tabs in half, wrong sides together, matching the short side. Open and fold the short edges to the middle and press
If you are making multiple pyramids, it is easier to press a long strap 2″ wide and then cut them 1 1/4″ long.
Prepare the zippers
You’ll need one (1) zipper 5″ long.
- Insert the zipper pull before attaching the zipper tabs.
- Place the Zipper in the zipper tab piece and sew across the zipper tape.
- Repeat for the other side of the zipper
Attach the zipper
- Center your zipper over the Exterior Fabric, RS down, aligning top edges.
- Baste the zipper to the exterior front pocket using around 1/8″ SA.
- Place the lining piece RST aligning the top edges (the zipper will be sandwiched between both layers)
- Sew accurately across the top – To ensure even spacing along the zipper, place the left side of the standard feet against the zipper coil. (about 3/8″)
- Pull the layers back away from the zipper and press. Use a wooden clapper to crisp the seam
- Topstich 1/8″ from the edge using 3.5 mm stitch (If using a different color for the lining, you might want to change your bobbin thread).
- Repeat for the other side of the zipper
Assemble the Bag
- Open your zipper half way
- Pull the 2 lining pieces together so that they are RS together, and pull the 2 exterior pieces together so that they are RS together.
Variation 1 – Zipper on corner
- Sew the long sides, making sure not to sew over the zipper tabs. On the lining, use 1/2″ seam allowance. This will give you a tighter lining.
- To form the pyramid, fold the short side matching seam allowances. Sew the ends, leaving about 3″ to turn the pyramid.
Tip: Nest the seams (sew them to opposite directions)
- Repeat on the lining side, leaving an small opening (about 2″) to turn the bag.
- Trim the seam allowances close to the zipper tabs and turn the bag right side out through the opening.
- Gently push out all the corners with a point turner.
- Pull the lining out and stitch the opening close to the edge.
- Push the lining in and press.
Variation 2 – Zipper on flat side
- Sew on one of the long sides and the short sides (on the lining side of one of the sides leave an opening for turning). On the lining, use 1/2″ seam allowance. This will give you a tighter lining.
- To form the pyramid, fold the long side centering the zipper over the lining seam allowance. Sew across through the exterior and lining layers all together.
- Turn the bag right side out through the opening.
- Gently push out all the corners with a point turner.
- Pull the lining out and stitch the opening close to the edge.
- Push the lining in and press.
My kids favorite is the one with the zipper in the corner 🙂
I hope you enjoyed this DIY Halloween Treat Bags tutorial.
Happy Halloween!
